Virgin Media and O2 Inspire the Next Generation of Women in STEM
On December 17th, Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2) joined forces to inspire young women to pursue careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). Their visit to Vandyke Upper School featured an engaging workshop aimed at encouraging girls to explore the exciting field of data and innovation.
The workshop kicked off with a hands-on session on decoding messages using various ciphers and encryption techniques. Ranging in difficulty, the activity highlighted the importance of data security and problem-solving skills in modern technology.
Students then took their creativity to new heights by working in groups to design innovative technology solutions. Among the imaginative ideas were:
· Octoglass: Smart glasses capable of adjusting to any prescription, equipped with voice input and a built-in light.
· 4nite Floss: A Bluetooth-enabled toothbrush that connected to Fortnite accounts, offering rewards and leader boards to motivate children to brush daily.
· Sports Smart Vest: A health-focused device tracking heart rate, blood pressure, distance, speed, and physical contact for active individuals.
· PlayPro Smart Vest: Aimed at professional athletes, this vest monitored performance metrics, stress, oxygen, and blood levels to help prevent health emergencies.
Each group confidently presented their ideas, demonstrating a strong understanding of their target audiences and the potential impact of their innovations.
To conclude the event, representatives from VMO2 provided insights into careers in data, highlighting the various pathways available to young women interested in STEM fields. By sharing real-world applications and career opportunities, they aimed to empower students to consider futures in this rapidly growing sector.
Virgin Media and O2’s visit showcased the power of hands-on learning and creativity in sparking interest in STEM. Their efforts to champion diversity in tech are a step forward in building a more inclusive and innovative future. We look forward to future visits and collaboration.
