Religion & Ethics students visit All Saints Church
At the end of last term, Y10 R&E students braved the (very wet) elements and walked into town to visit All Saints Church – something we had been looking forward to for some time.
After an extremely soggy walk, we were greeted by the vicar, Preb. David MacGeoch, and led into a Q&A session, where students asked about him about all manner of things, including how he ended up as the vicar here. He then led us on a tour of the church building, showing us all its wonderful history and secrets. Students were able to explore at their own pace, though he did draw the line at letting them have a go on the organ!
Preb. MacGeoch talked us through the various entrances and what they have traditionally been used for, showed us the font, the pulpit and the lectern, and all of the ‘artwork’ that has been left over the years scratched into the walls and pillars. One that really stood out was a carving of Simon and Nel – the originators of the Simnel cake.
Finally, students were led up to the main altar and shown the beautiful stained glass windows, and various chalices and cloths used during the Holy Communion – something they have recently tried for themselves in class, when they devised their own Eucharist services.
