Y11 GCSE Geography Trip to London Olympic Park
Year 11 GCSE Geography Trip to London Olympic Park: Regeneration in Action
Year 11 GCSE Geography students have been on a field trip to the London Olympic Park, where they had the chance to conduct fieldwork on the area’s renowned urban regeneration project. The park, once the site of the 2012 Olympics, is now a vibrant area showcasing sustainable development, offering the perfect opportunity for students to witness real-life examples of regeneration.
Fieldwork and Key Findings
The purpose of the trip was to analyse the success of the regeneration project and its impact on the local environment, economy, and community. Upon arrival, students were given a brief introduction to the park’s history before setting off on a walking tour that highlighted its transformation from an industrial wasteland into a thriving public space.
During their fieldwork, students examined key features of regeneration, including the creation of green spaces, modern residential buildings, and infrastructure that promotes sustainability. They conducted environmental quality surveys, footfall counts, observed changes in land use, and discussed the impact the project has had on the quality of life for local residents.
Lunch Break at Westfield
After a productive morning of fieldwork, students had the chance to relax and recharge with a visit to Westfield Stratford City for lunch. The modern shopping centre, which itself plays a key role in the regeneration of the area, provided students with another example of how the Olympic legacy continues to shape the local economy. From international retail stores to diverse food outlets, students experienced the commercial hub that has become central to the redevelopment of East London.
The visit was a success, not only in helping students gather essential data for their GCSE exam but also in allowing them to see first-hand the positive impacts of sustainable urban development.
