New Y11 students immersed in history in Berlin
In June and July, Vandyke Year 11 students had the incredible opportunity to visit Berlin, a city rich in history and culture. Across two separate trips, students explored key historical sites, bringing to life what they had learned in the classroom.
Day One began with an extensive walking tour of Berlin, where students were introduced to some of the city’s most iconic landmarks. A highlight of the day was lunch near the world-famous Brandenburg Gate, where students were able to take in the impressive architecture and atmosphere of the area. In the afternoon, the group visited the Topography of Terror museum, gaining a deeper understanding of Nazi Germany and its impact on the world. The day ended with a traditional German dinner, offering students the chance to sample local cuisine and reflect on the experiences of their first day.
On Day Two, the group travelled to Sachsenhausen concentration camp. This was a powerful and moving experience, and the students were exceptionally respectful throughout, demonstrating great maturity and empathy. In the afternoon, they visited the Olympic Park, exploring the site of the 1936 Olympics and learning about its historical significance. The day concluded with a highly praised curry dinner, enjoyed by staff and students alike.
Day Three was spent exploring some of Berlin’s most famous landmarks, including the Reichstag, Checkpoint Charlie, the Mall of Berlin, and the Holocaust Memorial. This gave students the chance to connect their historical knowledge with the places they have studied, while also enjoying the vibrant modern city.
On the final day, the group visited the Berlin Wall Memorial and the East Side Gallery. These visits helped students visualise the realities of the Cold War and the division of Germany, reinforcing their classroom learning in a memorable and meaningful way.
Although both trips experienced some minor delays on the journey home, students’ enthusiasm, manners, and clear enjoyment never wavered. They represented Vandyke Upper School brilliantly throughout the trip, making both visits a huge success.
