Vandyke Sixth Form students celebrate National Apprenticeship Week
Vandyke Sixth Form students celebrate National Apprenticeship Week (9-15 February 2026)
Our Sixth Form students had a busy week before half term to mark National Apprenticeship Week; meeting employers, hearing from our alumni and attending workshops to kick-start their search for apprenticeships. The last decade has seen a significant rise in professional apprenticeships; with employers drafting standards and linking with universities, this option provides students with a real alternative to the traditional route post sixth form.
Students were invited to talks with a variety of employers, including Early Careers Representatives from both KPMG and FCDO Services. Both Y12 and Y13 students were encouraged to research and apply for programmes, which promise supportive learning environments and fantastic progression with opportunities for travel and relocation.
Stefan B (Y13) said, “I found the week so useful, it gave me insight into different opportunities and routes into businesses that I would never have usually thought of. The FCDO Services talk was particularly enjoyable; I never would have considered a career in this area if I hadn’t attended the talk.”
We were also very lucky to have a member of Skills England visit us to run an interactive workshop with students reviewing apprenticeship standards and spending time reflecting on where students can build their skills and profiles for applications. The session was very popular, with over 30 students participating.
The week became even busier with alumni visitors. Two apprentices from Ernst Young (including former Vandyke student, Jake) held a two hour workshop, during which they presented to students about working life at EY and apprenticeship opportunities. They spoke very passionately about their experiences and have motivated many students to apply for schemes. We also had a visit from former student Maisie, a Solicitor apprentice at Osborne Clarke LLP, who spent the day with us, visiting Y12 law classes and supporting Y13 students with applications.
Lunchtime sessions were packed with assessment centre style activities, encouraging students to work together in teams under timed constraints to complete tasks such as making a spaghetti tower and building a balloon chair! Prizes were given for creativity and effort as team players.
Grace C (Y12) says of the events, “I found the week really helpful. There was a range of different activities and events to attend. I loved the 1-1 experiences, which gave me a first-hand impression of the roles that I am keen to apply for, allowing me to ask questions in person too. I really enjoyed the week and am grateful for the opportunities.”
The week has provided real food for thought, not only for those who have a particular career path in mind, but also for those who want to study further but don’t want to commit to a full-time university course after sixth form. Higher level and degree apprenticeships are on the rise, and although more competitive than ever, our students continue to receive a vast array of information, advice and guidance on this pathway. It is important that we continue to support students in their desire for a credible and rewarding alternative pathway.
Laura Davies, Sixth Form Careers Lead.
