Rosie wins nature-themed writing competition
We’re delighted to share the news that Year 9 student Rosie H (second from left in above photo) has won a UK-wide writing competition.
Words of the Wild is an annual competition which invites entrants to submit original written works inspired by Scotland’s wildlife and wild places. The theme this year was “From source to sea”, and writers were encouraged to use their work to celebrate Scotland’s rivers, lochs and coastal habitats. Entries could be written in English, Gaelic or Scots.
Rosie was joint winner of the Junior English category with her prose piece, Songs of Heather, Wind and Other Such Things. She was invited to attend a special ceremony at the Scottish Storytelling Centre in Edinburgh, where she was presented with the award.
As well as the honour of attending the ceremony, Rosie and the other winners received a bundle of nature and literary-themed prizes.
When asked about her award, Rosie said, “My story was about music in nature, because I think that natural sounds make up their own music, and it is beautiful. I was so excited when I found out I was shortlisted for the competition, and it was even better when I heard that I was a finalist! I loved coming to Edinburgh for the award ceremony at the Storytelling Centre – it is such a beautiful place. I couldn’t believe that I won: I just kept repeating it to myself over and over because I couldn’t quite get my head around it. Thank you, Scottish Wildlife Trust!”
Huge congratulations, Rosie – what an incredible achievement!

The Words of the Wild competition is organised by the Scottish Wildlife Trust and was this year supported by the Trust’s Riverwoods and Sea the Connection projects.
