Qualification: BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate in Information Technology

Course entry requirements: General BTEC requirements including English Language or English Literature and Maths at grade 4 or above. Although it is beneficial to have studied KS4 IT / Computer Science, it is not essential. However, if studied, students should have achieved at least a level 2 pass in IT or a grade 4 in Computer Science.
Course description
The BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate in Information Technology (IT) is a popular course that allows students to study the way that IT is used across a range of businesses and industries. The course is designed for students who are interested in an introduction to the study of creating IT systems to manage and share information, alongside other fields of study.
This course consists of four mandatory units that are assessed in three different ways; exam, practical extended task and two as coursework. Two are externally set and assessed by the exam board.
Mandatory Units (all must be completed)
Information Technology Systems (Exam)
Creating Systems to Manage Information (Extended Task set and marked by the exam board)
Using Social Media in Business (Coursework)
Optional Units (one must be completed)
Data modelling (Coursework) or Website Development (Coursework)
Coursework
Two of the units will comprise of coursework, which will be completed in the classroom and at home.
Evidence for coursework is recorded in a variety of ways including podcasts, videos, multimedia products, web pages, reports, observations, witness statements and interactive presentations. Each is linked to specific topics and audiences.
It is vitally important to keep to all deadlines.
Examination
One of the mandatory units will consist of a written examination and one is a Computer based extended task carried out in exam conditions over an extended period of time.
Post-18 Opportunities and Employment
Students completing their BTEC Extended Certificate in Information Technology will be aiming towards higher education or direct employment in one of many different careers, for example:

- Information Management for Business
- Games Authoring
- Business Computing
- Business Information Technology
- Computing
