Curriculum Intent
Communication Studies is a targeted, literacy-based intervention offered in Year 9, with the aim of improving reading ages. Students are exposed to a wealth of texts to encourage reading, decoding, analysis, discussion and debate.
As well as classroom-based lessons, students have one lesson a fortnight with a drama trained teacher in the drama studio. These lessons involve partaking in more practical and creative activities such as set design, role play and speech delivery to increase confidence, oracy and communication skills.
Students take two NGRT reading tests during the year to evaluate reading age data, enable students and teachers to reflect on progress, and instil a sense of achievement as students move up into Year 10.
