A Level Physical Education
Qualification: A Level Physical Education (OCR)
Course Tutor: Miss M Pearson
Course entry requirements: General A level entry requirements including a grade 56 in Combined Science (Trilogy) or grade 6 in GCSE Biology if you have studied Triple Science. If you have studied GCSE PE the entry requirement is a grade 6. Applicants must also play sport at club level.
Course description
The course offers students a unique opportunity to follow their interest in sport and fitness.
Component 1 - Physiological Factors Affecting Performance. 30% of total.
Component 2 - Psychological Factors Affecting Performance. 20% of total.
Component 3 - Socio-Cultural Issues in Physical Activity & Sport. 20% of total.
Component 4 - Performance in Physical Education/ Evaluation & Analysis of Performance for Improvement (EAPI). 30% of total.
Performance/Coaching in 1 Sport.
Examination
Component 1 - 2 hour written paper, 90 marks in total, combination of multiple choice, short answer and extended writing questions
Component 2 - 1 hour written paper, 60 marks, combination of multiple choice, short answer and extended writing questions
Component 3 - 1 hour written paper, 60 marks, combination of multiple choice, short answer and extended writing questions
Component 4 - 60 marks, internal assessment of practical performance, external moderation of performance in one sport.
EAPI Video/ Recorded coursework discussion.
Coursework
The coursework aspect of the course is the EAPI, where students will be expected to analyse & evaluate a performance verbally having made written notes. This forms part of component 4 with the practical performance. We also expect students to be competing at club level regularly to aid in the EAPI completion.
Post-18 Opportunities and Employment
The course is suitable for students who are aiming to go on to university and study a sports related degree, teacher training, sports analyst, sports psychologist, physiotherapy, nutritionist, etc. or progress onto higher training apprenticeships within the sport and leisure industry.

Sport (Extended Certificate)
Qualification: BTEC Level 3 (Edexcel)
Course Tutor: Mr M Moodie
Course entry requirements: General BTEC entry requirements. A grade 5 in GCSE PE or Sports Science is preferred but not compulsory.
Course description
The course offers students a unique opportunity to follow their interest in sport and fitness.
BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Sport - Equivalent to one A level
Units covered :
Unit 1 – Anatomy and Physiology (Written Exam)
Unit 2 – Programming for Health, Sport and Well-being (Written Exam)
Unit 3 – Professional Development in the Sports industry (Coursework)
Unit 7 – Practical sports performance (Coursework)
The course will require pupils to have suitable sports kits for practical and leadership lessons.
Examination
Two external assessments which contributes towards the final grade:
Unit 1 – Anatomy and Physiology (Written exam, 90 minutes)
Unit 2 – Programming for Health, Sport and Well-being (Externally assessed case study, written exam 2.5 hours)
All other units are coursework based.
Pupils will have the opportunity to sit the exam in year 12 and in year 13 (although there is an additional cost to this).
Coursework
All coursework units are assessed through approximately 4-5 tasks.
Each unit is assessed through written work, presentations, observation records, witness statements and practical coursework.
Coursework is completed in lessons and at home. You will be accredited with either a pass, merit, distinction for each unit. In your final grade you can achieve a distinction.
Post-18 Opportunities and Employment
The course is suitable for students who are aiming to go on to university and study a sports related degree or progress onto higher training apprenticeships within the sport and leisure industry. Potential career paths could include careers in teacher training, physiotherapy, sports coaching and health and fitness.
