Sixth Form Law students attend a Criminology Conference in London
We travelled to London by coach, excited to see what the day would bring. Miss Chirstmas-Da Silva had said we would be talking with a real killer (we thought she was exaggerating).
We arrived with coachloads of other A level students from all over the country to start our very first conference. We started with a talk from a top lecturer on what Criminology actually is (the sociological study of crime) and then into a talk from another speaker about life in the Hijab and what prejudice she experienced wearing it for research. Then we had another university lecturer discuss domestic violence as a crime and the effects on drug dependent victims.
Finally our last speaker appears on stage, a real life criminal who had come to share his story. He had killed a man and been to prison when he wasn’t much older than us. His story was shocking and really challenged our opinions on criminals and punishment. It was a great day and we learnt a lot about crime and our society.
