Vandyke Upper School 3 – 3 Tunbridge Wells Grammar (A.E.T). Vandyke win 2 – 0 on penalties

Vandyke Under 15 boys reached the National final held at the FA’s National Football Centre, St George’s Park in Burton Upon Trent. Vandyke had progressed through the South Bedfordshire District competition, Bedfordshire finals and the regional finals to reach this prestigious showcase final held in the National Futsal Dome.

Tunbridge Wells Grammar were the opponents and ensured the grand final was the spectacle it deserved to be. The two teams were evenly matched throughout and the game was played at a phenomenal pace. Tunbridge took the lead before the break and then doubled their tally early into the second half. A combination of great saves from the Tunbridge goalkeeper and excellent defensive work kept Vandyke at bay. With 6 minutes remaining captain and top scorer, James McGlinchey, pulled a goal back. The game was tied when Josh Hatton crossed to Kenzie Cross, who headed into the goal from close range. The elation of the goal in the dying minutes was replaced with despair when with just three minutes remaining in the second period of extra time Tunbridge Wells scored what looked to be the winning goal. A horribly deflected goal left keeper Harrison Sanders with no chance. The Vandyke squad though have developed great resolve and they refuse to be beaten. In the final minute and with the last chance of the game, McGlinchey grabbed his second, sending the team and supporters into delirium.

The final would be decided by penalty kicks and the momentum had clearly swung in Vandyke’s favour. In the best of three shootout, Harrison Sanders was the hero saving the first two spot kicks. Alfie Leach had already converted which left Ed Horne to smash in the winning kick and scenes of joy for the newly crowned National Futsal champions.

Tudor Lewis, Chairman of Bedfordshire Schools Football, stated; ‘A wonderful occasion and deserved outcome for Vandyke. In the past fifty years only one Bedfordshire school has ever lifted a National football trophy. Congratulations to this history making team’.
