Memories of our trip to Buckingham Palace to celebrate the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award
While the death of Prince Philip last week was sad news, it was an important moment in the country irrespective of our royalist leanings or otherwise, it brought back happy memories from May 2016 when Mrs Green, who leads our Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme work, and I were invited to a garden party at Buckingham Palace to celebrate the scheme. From around 3000 guests on that gloriously sunny afternoon in central London on the manicured lawns we were among those few to be introduced in person.
The photograph below shows actress Anna Friel, who was the host for our group with Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, with Mrs Green and I waiting our turn.
Mrs Green and Miss Gibbs, along with many staff volunteers, give up a lot of time to run the Duke of Edinburgh scheme at Vandyke and we have over 150 students benefitting from these opportunities each year. It is a terrific scheme that so many young people have enjoyed and learned so much from.
