Elspeth Baeke, founder of SMILE MALAWI visits Vandyke
Just before lockdown, Sixth Form students were delighted to present Elspeth Baeke, the founder of Smile Malawi, with a cheque for £3011, which they raised during SMILE week last November. Elspeth was once again astonished and delighted to receive this cheque. Smile Malawi is a charity that rescues vulnerable, orphaned children in Malawi and provides them with a home and education. Elspeth was able to give students an update on the work of the organisation and explained that the money would fund the orphanage for a whole month! Vandyke students and staff are proud to have supported the charity over the past 11 years.
Director of Sixth Form at the time, Mr Downey, was full of praise for the students. “They worked so hard during SMILE week, planned so well and delivered some excellent fundraising events. To raise such a large amount of money in such a short period of time is a fantastic achievement. Once again we are really proud of all of them.”
