The aim of the science curriculum at Vandyke Upper School is for students to have a scientific understanding of the world around them, so they can be included in discussions surrounding their future. For example; the pandemic (COVID 19), climate change, electric cars and sustainability issues.
Our spiral curriculum introduces ideas, skills and concepts in manageable chunks and builds on these areas in logical sequences, enabling students to deepen understanding, ask questions and retain key information.
STAMP assessments are completed bi-weekly to assess and support students’ knowledge and understanding of areas they have covered. There is also a centrally set homework that precedes the STAMPs and is designed to support and develop understanding of the topic area.
Teachers employ a range of activities and strategies to develop long term memories - from practical tasks to scaffolding of concepts and ideas, to discussions and knowledge organisers.
