Life Skills

Curriculum Intent

Our aim in Life Skills is that students will leave Vandyke with the understanding, knowledge and skills to thrive in the wider world. They will be able to become functioning members of society, in the local as well as national context.

Life Skills lessons will provide students with the knowledge, skills and understanding, through excellent teaching, to prepare them to play a full and active part in society and the wider working world. Students will have memorable experiences that allow them to develop socially, mentally, morally and spiritually to thrive in the wider world.

You can read our full curriculum overview here.

Life Skills lessons include Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE).  We send a letter to parents at the start of each year, which outlines the content which will be covered in lessons and explains your right to withdraw your child from lessons that do not cover content which can be found in the Science curriculum. You can also read our RSHE Policy here.

Life Skills also encompasses Religious Education. Religious Education at Vandyke is inclusive, broad and balanced exploring a range of religious and non-religious points of view. However, parents still have the right to withdraw their child from all or part RE on the grounds that they wish to provide their own RE (School Standards & Framework Act 1998 S71(3)). You can read more about your right to withdraw your child from RE lessons in our letter to parents.
