Cheque presented to Smile Malawi

We were delighted to welcome Elspeth Baecke, founder of the Smile Malawi charity, to school on Monday.  We were even more delighted to present her with a cheque for £3,095 at a special assembly!

Elspeth happily received the cheque from the Y13 Senior Student Team before telling our Y12 students all about the work of Smile Malawi and the difference the money we’ve raised will make. The first Smile Malawi Children’s Centre opened in November 2006 and now gives a home to 36 children who were jointly identified by Malawi Social Services and Smile Malawi from Blantyre and the local villages.  The charity also helps the local community of Kapeya with a developing outreach programme, primarily targeting the children and local school.

Last November, Sixth Form students and staff organised an incredible array of fundraising activities for our annual Smile Week event. It was a great week, with daily dress-up themes and fantastic shows in the theatre, including Teacher Taskmaster, Villain Fashion Show, Teacher Drag Race and Lip Sync Battle. And of course we mustn’t forget the Vandyke’s Got Talent show, when we were treated to some amazing performances from our students. The week was rounded off with a non-uniform day for Y9-11 students.

The Sixth Form team were thrilled to smash their £3000 fundraising target and make a great contribution to Smile Malawi’s fantastic work. Well done everyone!
