Arsenal Ladies’ Football Coach visits Vandyke

Jun 10, 2019

On 17th May we were fortunate enough to have a visit from Peter Hagan, one of the Arsenal Ladies coaches, who ran a workshop on the opportunities for women in football.

The visit started with a presentation on the community work Arsenal do in promoting women’s football. The girls learned about the opportunities for women in football and what it takes to become a professional in the women’s game. All the girls involved were listening attentively and asked many questions about his role as coach, and the club setup itself. The girls were then treated to a coaching session on ball control and dribbling, where throwing bibs at people (part of the game) became their new favourite thing.

Speaking to a few of the girls at the end, they all thoroughly enjoyed the session. Year 9 student, Abby Wakelin said, “I really enjoyed the coaching session, I think it’s important to encourage girls to take part in sport and this has opened my eyes to the opportunities for women in the game.”

Peter was a great visitor to the school and our students took a lot away from it. I look forward to seeing who becomes the new Steph Houghton!
