A level Law student, Ryan Kelly, scores Solicitor Apprenticeship with top London Law firm!

May 10, 2021

I knew from the start of Sixth Form that I wanted an apprenticeship instead of studying at university full-time. I wanted to work and study towards qualifications at the same time and have been fortunate enough to be offered a Solicitor Apprenticeship Role at CMS in London from September, which will last six years and provide me with the sponsorship to become a solicitor.

After a long application process that started in December, I attended regular apprenticeship workshops led by Miss Davies and searched for available solicitor apprenticeships in both Milton Keynes and London. For CMS, I had to complete a detailed application form which asked questions such as ‘Why do you want to work for CMS?’ I did some research into the firm and made sure I had plenty of super-curricular to talk about in the achievements and experience sections (work experience, reading, moots). During the next stage, I was asked to complete an aptitude test online made up of problem solving questions and scenarios which, personally, was one of the toughest elements of the entire process. This progressed into an automated video interview, where I answered questions about myself and the company as if I was meeting the partners in person – I found this relatively easy and there were no questions to catch me out.

The last part of my application was an assessment day, and whilst I couldn’t go to their offices in person, the virtual experience was just as enjoyable. From undertaking independent case study tasks under timed-pressure to an interview with the partners, both were a great learning opportunity for me to develop my way of working. The day culminated in a group task, which allowed me to get to know others who were applying for the same role as well as being given the opportunity for them to share their way of working with me as well. Overall, the day was great experience and it was made even better when the law firm offered me a place!
