Student Voice Christmas Visits
Student Voice representatives from Year 9 and 10 took part in visits to a care home, a sheltered housing development and to the Leighton Linslade Homeless Service.
In regular student voice meetings we came up with the campaign ‘Don’t walk on by!’ which included ideas such as collecting for a toothpaste tower, shower gel/shampoo mountain and gathering willingly donated items, which once collected together, reached a new level of support within Vandyke. In addition, through the school production ‘Grease’ and donations of loose change throughout the school, we managed to raise a further £350 for the local community.
On 19th December, a group of students took part in delivering hampers of collected essentials to the ‘Black Horse’ for their homeless support service. Here they store the collected items and allocate them where needed. A proportion of donations is also used for the homeless sleep shelters that occur within the churches of Leighton Buzzard around Christmas where locals who are rough living are able to go for access to a hot dinner and breakfast and somewhere safer to stay the night. The cause is relocated to different churches around the area over the winter months where volunteers help out.
Following this we went to visit senior citizens at Laburnum Court and Swiss Cottage. We gave a traditional Christmas flower of pointsettia and a goody bag of chocolates to each person, sang Christmas carols and wished them all a Merry Christmas.
We really enjoyed helping the community and spending time listening to the stories others had to share.
