Mrs Readhead swims at the GB European Masters 2016

Staff and students at Vandyke Upper School were recently surprised to discover the hidden talent of one of our teachers.  Teacher of Maths, Amanda Readhead competed for Great Britain in three swimming events at the European Masters 2016.  Masters swimming is for anyone over twenty five years of age, is as inclusive as possible to  encourage goal achievement for each individual and is competed in five year age bands.

Amanda began training with Maxwell Swimming Club, Aylesbury in July last year, after a seventeen year break from the pool! She got ‘into’ swimming at the age of eight, where she very quickly progressed through Dunstable Swimming Club and was entered into local competitions.  Between the age of ten to seventeen years, Amanda was achieving success in tough competitions at County, District and National levels.

After all this time out of the sport Amanda said, “I decided to get back into competitive swimming to keep up with my nine year old children, who are themselves, excellent swimmers”.

After attaining the qualification times according to European and World standards, swimmers were  allowed to compete in up to three events.  Amanda actually qualified for every event that she entered and the three that she chose to compete in were 200m Individual Medley, 50m Breaststroke and 50m Fly.  The Championships ran from 26th to 29th May and Amanda  commented, “My real motivation for entering the Europeans was my desire to swim competitively in the Olympic pool, but  I do hope to achieve some personal bests too!”

Amanda was on target to meet  this ambition hitting her long course pb's on the 50br and the 50fly, but achieved an excellent result in the 200IM where she achieved a 9 second pb and finished 36th in her age group in Europe.

"Swimming in the Olympic pool was an amazing experience, added to by the fact that I more than achieved my personal goals.  I  now need to decide on a new target - possibly the Europeans in Slovenia in 2 years time or the Worlds in Budapest next year!"

Well done Amanda!!
