Aim Higher Evening

Post 16-18 options were explored on Thursday 3rd March at Vandyke’s annual Aim Higher Evening.  Students from all year groups were given the opportunity to meet representatives from a range of post 16 providers, including local colleges, universities and apprenticeship providers. Many Year 11 and Year 12 students were seen talking to professionals from the world of work, laden with prospectuses, information leaflets, and the odd free pen!

In a packed dance studio, stalls were manned by a wide range of representatives from higher and further education establishments, training providers and employers; among those offering advice and guidance were staff from the universities of Bedfordshire, Northampton and Anglia Ruskin. Also present were Bedford, Milton Keynes, Aylesbury and Pearson colleges, and companies offering training and apprenticeship opportunities.  In addition to this there were stalls from engineering apprenticeships, 4YPUK, MK Dons, the Army and local employer – Connells Estate Agents.

In the theatre, Director of Sixth Form, Mr Downey, gave talks on the benefits of higher education, whilst students were also offered talks focused on alternative routes, such as apprenticeships, by Mary Palmer from Bedford College.

‘Much to our delight it was an extremely busy and well attended evening, with close to 90% of Year 12s turning up to make the most of the information and advice on offer.  Hopefully it gave them momentum for the vital research and decision-making about their  future that begins in earnest after Easter,’ said Mr Downey.  ‘It was also good to see some of the lower year students there - it’s never too early to be thinking about your future!’

Many thanks to all providers, Mr Downey, Ms Fahy and Ms Lord for making this evening a success.
