Year 9 - Future Scholars

Five Year 9 students were able to undertake a visit recently to the University of Manchester through the government-funded Future Scholars scheme. They joined 70 fellow students from schools across the country.

The day comprised a series of seminars to give a taste of learning at university.  The first was a group task to design and build a solar-powered model car which students greatly enjoyed.  The second was more sedentary but offered a fascinating insight into ancient manuscripts.  A one hour seminar took students on a guided journey at the end of which they were able to reflect back on the huge amount of learning they had accomplished.

Lunch in the refectory, a tour of the campus and talks about university life topped off the day and left students hurrying to catch the train back to Milton Keynes.

Students reflected on the different activities and taste of undergraduate life.  Comments included, “It helped me to see what you can get if you work hard”, “It really opens your eyes to what it might be like and all the support you get there” and “it has made me appreciate how interesting it is and think going to university would be a great experience”.
