Smile Week

18 October 2010 :: Smile Week

The Sixth Form have been planning our annual Smile Week for the last few weeks. We raise money for an orphanage in Malawi and to date have donated about £7000.  We aim to add to this this year, topping last year’s total of over £2000.

A visit by Elspeth Baecke, the founder of Smile Malawi has helped to enthuse the students to put in even greater effort.  Elspeth spoke to Sixth Form assembly on 11th October and then met with a group of students to talk about the project and its future.  The orphanage now provides a home for 25 children aged between five and fifteen, who were formerly living on the streets of Blantyre (capital of Malawi).

Smile Week brings a smile to Vandyke, through all the activities at lunch and break, which range from Sumo wrestling to Strictly Come Dancing; from space hopper races to eating competitions via Blind Date and staff and student sponsored waxing!  The week culminates in a non-uniform day, fancy dress for Sixth Formers and Vandyke’s Got Talent on the Friday. More importantly it brings a smile to the faces of the children whose care and opportunities depend on the money raised by people like us!

Watch out for the pictures of this year’s events in the next edition of Vandyke Voice

14 September 2010 :: Star coaching for Vandyke students at Woburn Golf Club

Seven lucky Vandyke students from Years 10 and 11 were invited to attend a golf coaching session at Woburn Golf and Country Club.  The event took place on Friday 3rd September and was organised by the Golf Foundation.

Each student was partnered with one of the professional golfers taking part in the ‘Senior Masters’ Competition.  PE teacher and Sports College Development Manager Mr Cox said “It was great to see our young people receiving group and one to one coaching from some of the world’s best golfers”.

Vandyke students were given excellent advice and top tips from a number of professional golfers, including Barry Lane, Roger Chapman, Peter Barber and Gary Wolstenholme.  Kirsty and Abi Kennedy both commented “We worked with Barry Lane and he was amazing, one of the best coaches.”  Abi added “He gave us some great tips such as how to improve my swing speed”.

In fact, every student was given a written breakdown on things to improve which they found really helpful.  Richard Hill said “The event was really well organised and great fun. I came away feeling as though I’d really learnt a lot”.
