PE and Sport at Vandyke

Vandyke became a Specialist Sports College in 2005 and developed into  ‘a centre of excellence’ in physical education and sport.  Sport and leadership opportunities have been developed throughout the school and within the local community which has inspired learning for all our students and motivated lifelong participation in sport.  We have worked with partner schools and sports clubs to ensure that all 5-18 year olds have access to high quality PE and sport.  With the changing educational landscape the school decided not to continue with its Sports College designation.  However we host the Partnership Development Manager and School Games Organiser and continue to lead on sporting initiatives for our area.

We position PE at the heart of our curriculum where it makes a distinctive contribution to whole school improvement, creating innovative learning and leadership opportunities for all our students.

PE and Sport as 'A Centre of Excellence'

Teaching of Physical Education

The quality of teaching in PE is good and is improving each year due to the sharing of ideas and expertise and there is some outstanding practice.  Staff use a wide range of teaching styles and strategies which are designed to meet the needs of all learners and students take part in a wide range of activities. (See PE area of the website for further details.)

Sports Leadership Academy

We have established a Sports Leadership Academy which enables students to gain Sports Coaching/Leadership qualifications at a reduced rate.  Once they have qualified, they can then carry out at least 10 hours coaching in the partnership as 'pay back' for the financial support received.

Working with Wider Community Groups

Community Sports Clubs

85% of all accredited clubs have been officially linked to School Sports Partnership within 6 miles of Leighton Buzzard.

There has been joint funding to enable the establishment of successful cycling, basketball and badminton community clubs and we are currently working on setting up community volleyball and handball clubs.

Sportsability Club

Links have been established with Leighton Buzzard Mencap group and the partnership has been assisting the development of sport within the group.

International School Links

Previously staff and students from Vandyke and our partner upper school colleges have visited Phakama School in South Africa and worked closely with them to develop sporting leadership and sporting opportunities for students.  It was an amazing experience which everybody really enjoyed.
