Food Technology

Food Technology is a very popular subject at Vandyke. There are two well-equipped and inspiring food rooms which are light and pleasant to work in.

We offer students a variety of courses at all levels.

Food Technology in Year 9

Students are required to work independently and practice a wide range of food handling skills during their practical sessions.   Project work also enhances the students’ ability to develop and evaluate their dishes

GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition

This GCSE is very popular and offers students a chance to improve their food practical skills as they learn a wide variety of catering techniques and make a vast range of international dishes. Topics of study include nutrition, methods of cooking, food safety and nutrition.

Coursework accounts for fifty percent of this qualification and a written exam at the end of Y11 makes up the remaining fifty percent. The Food Preparation and Nutrition GCSE can be a useful spring-board for students either seeking a career in the food industry or preparing themselves for the future in order to live a healthy life.

Level 3 Food Science and Nutrition (from September 2017)
The food and grocery industry is the UK’s largest employer and the Level 3 Food Science and Nutrition (equivalent to 1 A level) is a useful qualification for students interested in further progressing towards studying a wide range of degrees or wishing to go into a career in catering and hospitality. Learners will have the opportunity to learn about the relationship between the human body and food as well as practical skills about cooking and preparing food.

All students are well supported by the teaching team to ensure that they are encouraged to reach their full potential throughout their time in Food Technology.
